LEI · Lapsed entities
Lapsed LEI? Renew it and clean up your entity records.
A Legal Entity Identifier (LEI) is a 20-character code that identifies a company or fund in financial transactions and regulatory reports. It must be renewed every year. If it isn't, GLEIF shows it as 'lapsed' — and banks, brokers and regulators notice.
The rules at a glance
- Renewal
- Every 12 months through an LEI issuer (LOU)
- If missed
- Status shows as 'Lapsed' in the GLEIF database
- Used in
- Form PF, Form N-CEN, trade reporting and bank onboarding
- Check status
- GLEIF LEI search (public)
Who this applies to
- Private funds, feeder funds and SPVs
- General partners and management companies
- Registered funds and their advisers
- Any entity that trades derivatives or files reports that ask for an LEI
Why it matters
- • Brokers and trading counterparties may refuse trades for a lapsed LEI
- • Regulatory reports that ask for an LEI may show stale entity data
- • Fund names and addresses often drift out of sync across SEC, GLEIF and state records

Common questions
What does a lapsed LEI mean?
The LEI was not renewed within 12 months. The code still exists, but GLEIF shows its data as out of date until it is renewed.
Can I renew a lapsed LEI?
Yes. Renew it through your current LEI issuer or transfer it to another one. The LEI number stays the same.
Do private funds need an LEI?
Many do. Form PF filers, funds that trade derivatives, and funds opening certain bank or broker accounts are usually asked for one.
