Missed your FinCEN MSB renewal? Get your registration current.
Money services businesses — money transmitters, check cashers, currency exchangers, prepaid access providers and many crypto businesses — must register with FinCEN and renew every two years. Missing the renewal leaves the business operating unregistered.
The rules at a glance
- Initial registration
- FinCEN Form 107, within 180 days of starting business
- Renewal
- Every two years, by December 31 of the year before the renewal period
- Re-register
- After certain changes in ownership, control or structure
- Agent list
- Keep a current agent list and update it each year
Who this applies to
- Money transmitters and payment companies
- Check cashers and currency exchangers
- Prepaid access providers and sellers
- Crypto and virtual currency businesses that qualify as MSBs
Why it matters
- • Operating without a current registration is a federal violation
- • Banks review MSB registration and may close accounts
- • Registration does not replace state money transmitter licenses or an AML program
